The Different color birds and Different type of nests. The head has two eyes, one beak and two ears.

Most birds have one eye on either side of the head. Owls have both the eyes on the front. Ears are hidden under feathers.

Some birds have a colorful skin on their head.

Some have unusual feathers on their head.

A bird’s size, color, types of feet and beak help us to identify it.

Some birds have very short necks, some having long necks whereas some have medium sized necks.

I. Nesting habits

Birds build nests to lay, protect and hatch their eggs.

Nests also give protection to the parent and the baby birds.

1) Who builds the nest?

Among some birds only one of the parents builds the nest. In others, both parents help each other to build the nest.

2) When do they build nest?

Birds build nests just before the egg-laying season.

Some birds use the same nest again and again.

Some build new nests in each season.

3) Where do they build the nest?

Birds build nests in various places.

Domestic sparrow and pigeons build their nests inside our houses.

Others build nests in or on the trees, in hollow places, caves, on rocks and cliffs and even on large floating leaves of aquatic plants.

II. Types of materials

· Birds use different types of materials to build their nests.

*Dry sticks, twigs, grass, cotton, leaves, feathers, roots, cobwebs, mud, moss and metal wires are some of the materials used.

*Koels and cuckoos do not build nests. These mischievous and lazy birds lay their eggs in the nests of other birds.

III. Parental care

· Most of the birds are good parents.

*Mostly, both the parents help each other in taking care of their young ones.

*However in some birds only one of the parents takes care of the young ones.

*The young ones cannot survive without the loving care of their parents.

1) Hatching

· Birds sit over their eggs without damaging them. Chicks grow in the eggs due to their body heat. When ready, the chicks break open the eggshell with their beak and come out. This is called hatching the eggs.

2) Food for the nestlings

· Nestlings are hungry all the time. They eat a lot of food and grow up fast. Mostly both the parents bring food and feed the nestlings.

*Birds look after the nestling till they are able to look after themselves.
